Heat recovery ventilation
A heat recovery ventilation system brings filtered fresh air into the house and takes stale, damp air out, passing up to 94% of the heat from the outgoing air to the incoming air. Fresh air without opening windows and losing the heat you paid for.
- Up to 94% heat recovery
- Pollen filters, F7 option
- Helps prevent condensation and mould
Ducted or through-wall?
Building or renovating with ceiling space: ducted
One central unit in a cupboard or roof space, with ducts to every room. The most even airflow and the highest heat recovery. Best planned before the plasterboard goes up.
Existing home, no ducts: through-wall
VLR 70 units go through an outside wall in pairs: one breathes in while the other breathes out, swapping about every 40 seconds. No ducts, no roof work.
Size it by floor area
Our ducted kits cover 80 to 280 m² of living space; one pair of VLR 70 units covers about 70 m². Not sure? The design service plans it from your floor plans.
Questions about heat recovery ventilation
Does heat recovery ventilation heat or cool my house?
No. It keeps most of the heat (or coolth) you already have while it changes the air. Some units have a summer bypass that lets cool night air in without passing through the heat exchanger.
How often do the filters need changing?
Typically every 6 to 12 months, more often near busy roads or in bushfire smoke. The ducted units remind you. Replacement filter sets are on our ventilation filters page.
Can I install it myself?
Much of a kit (ducts, vents, hanging straps) is straightforward building work, but the electrical connection must be done by a licensed electrician, and Stiebel Eltron's warranty needs installation by licensed tradespeople and a certificate of compliance.
