Heat pump hot water rebates, state by state

Every Stiebel Eltron hot water heat pump earns the federal rebate, worth about $530 to $610 in most of Australia in 2026. You can claim it after buying online and having your own plumber install. State rebates come on top, but most only work through an accredited installer.

The federal rebate: STCs

The Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme gives every eligible heat pump a number of certificates (STCs). You sell them to an STC agent, who pays you. The number depends on the model and your postcode zone. For an installation in 2026:

How to claim it when you buy from us

Your licensed plumber installs the unit and gives you a certificate of compliance and an invoice.
Take photos of the installed unit and its serial number with your phone's location turned on, so the photos carry the date, time and place.
Fill in an STC agent's assignment form (Stiebel Eltron lists Green Bank, Green Energy Trading, Energy Conservation and Renewable Energy Traders Australia) and send it with the evidence and our tax invoice.
The agent pays you, usually by bank transfer.

You have 12 months from installation to create the STCs. Do it in the first month, while the paperwork is fresh.

Install before the end of 2026 if you can. On 1 January 2027 the number of STCs per heat pump drops by about a fifth (the deeming period goes from 5 years to 4). On an SHP-O 300 Plus in Sydney that is 15 STCs now and about 12 next year. The scheme ends in 2030.

State by state

What your state adds, and who gives it

State discounts are real money, but they are paid through accredited installers or providers who control the installation. If you qualify for one, compare an installed-after-rebate price with our price plus your plumber. If you don't qualify, buying the unit online and claiming STCs is usually the cheaper path.

Victoria VIC

Up to $1,000 + VEU discount

Solar Homes pays 50% of the price, up to $1,000, but only through an authorised hot water retailer who also installs, and only if you qualify (owner-occupier, existing home, household income under $150,000, old system at least 3 years old). The Victorian Energy Upgrades discount (roughly $560 to $630 indicative) also runs through an accredited provider. Buying supply-only, you get the federal STC rebate.

From 1 March 2027, a gas hot water system in Victoria must be replaced with an efficient electric one when it fails.

New South Wales NSW

Up to $640 (replacing electric)

The Energy Savings Scheme discount (up to $640 replacing electric, up to $330 replacing gas, indicative) is given by an Accredited Certificate Provider, and your installer has to work with that provider from before the install. Buying supply-only, you get the federal STC rebate.

Queensland QLD

STCs only

No state hot water rebate is open in 2026. You get the federal STC rebate.

South Australia SA

REPS discount via provider

The Retailer Energy Productivity Scheme discount is arranged by an activity provider who manages the installation. Buying supply-only, you get the federal STC rebate.

ACT ACT

Up to $2,500 for concession holders

The Home Energy Support Program pays 50% of supply and installation, up to $2,500, for pensioner, Health Care and DVA Gold card holders, applied for together with an accredited supplier before the install. Low-interest loans run through accredited vendors. Canberra is STC zone 5: the SHP-O 200 Plus earns no STCs there.

Tasmania TAS

STCs only

The state Energy Saver Loan Scheme closed in September 2025. You get the federal STC rebate. Tasmania is STC zone 5: the SHP-O 200 Plus earns no STCs there.

Western Australia WA

STCs only

No state hot water rebate. You get the federal STC rebate.

Northern Territory NT

STCs

You get the federal STC rebate. Note that delivery to the NT is not free.

Heat pumps for heating

Air-to-water heat pumps for floor heating and radiators earn no STCs, and the state heating schemes cover reverse-cycle air conditioners only. The Australian Government's Household Energy Upgrades Fund offers discounted green loans through lenders such as Brighte, Plenti and several banks.

Rebate questions

Can I get a rebate if I buy online and use my own plumber?

Yes, the federal one. STCs belong to whoever owns the system, and your licensed plumber's compliance certificate is part of the evidence. You assign them to an STC agent after installation and the agent pays you. State rebates are different: they mostly need an accredited installer or provider involved from the start.

How much is the STC rebate worth?

For a heat pump installed in 2026, 14 to 16 STCs for most models and most cities. At about $38 each, that is roughly $530 to $610. The exact number depends on the model and your postcode zone.

Is there a deadline?

You must create the STCs within 12 months of installation. The value also falls: a heat pump installed in 2027 earns about 20% fewer STCs than one installed in 2026, and the scheme ends in 2030.

Do heat pumps for floor heating get a rebate?

No. Air-to-water heat pumps for space heating get no STCs, and the state heating activities cover reverse-cycle air conditioners only. Green loans through the Household Energy Upgrades Fund lenders can help with the cost.

Which Stiebel Eltron model gets the most?

The SHP-O 300 Plus and SHP-O 301 Premium earn the most STCs in every zone. In Canberra, Tasmania and the colder parts of Victoria (zone 5), avoid the SHP-O 200 Plus: it earns none there.
